Importance of the Right Desk
An estate agent has been awarded a £21,411 payout after complaining that he was effectively demoted by being assigned a desk that did not reflect his seniority.
Nicholas Walker sued bosses at Robsons, an agency in Hertfordshire, after he was assigned to a different branch and told to sit at a “middle” desk rather than the “back”, which was typically where the manager was positioned.
For the five years before his move in 2022, Walker had been a branch manager.
The “experienced” 53-year-old estate agent told an employment tribunal that he had been upset by his desk position after the move, arguing that he felt as though his status had been undermined.
When his boss learnt of Walker’s objection, he said he could not believe that “a man of his age” was “making a fuss” about a desk.
Walker, who was also a director of the agency, immediately submitted his resignation and has now been awarded £21,411 in compensation after suing for unfair constructive dismissal.
